Conroe traces its roots to 1881, when Houston lumberman Isaac Conroe established a sawmill on Stewart’s Creek at the junction of the International-Great Northern Railroad. A post office opened at the mill in 1884 under the name Conroe’s Switch, and within a decade the name was shortened to Conroe. The arrival of a second rail line in the mid-1880s made it the county’s key rail junction, fueling a lumber boom and helping the town replace Montgomery as county seat in 1889.

Conroe weathered the Great Depression until oil was struck nearby in 1931, launching a boom that reshaped the city. The creation of 22,000-acre Lake Conroe in 1973 transformed the economy again, bringing recreation, lakeside development, and long-term growth.
