History & Facts
Built Around Nature
The Woodlands is one of the most recognized master-planned communities in the country, created around the idea of preserving nature while building a self-contained hometown just north of Houston.
Founded by George Mitchell
Houston developer George P. Mitchell began assembling roughly 28,000 acres of forested land in the 1960s around the former Grogan’s Lumber Company site, laying the groundwork for a new kind of suburban community.
Opened in 1974
Construction began in 1972, and The Woodlands officially opened on October 19, 1974, as one of thirteen HUD-backed new towns built around a live, work, play, and learn philosophy.
Preserved Green Space
Mitchell insisted on keeping at least 28% of the native pine forest intact, a vision still visible in the tree-lined streets, greenbelts, and the George Mitchell Nature Preserve.
A Lasting Influence
With nine residential villages, a central Town Center, major employers, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, The Woodlands continues to shape how master-planned communities are designed across the Houston region.

The Woodlands sets a high standard for how homes are built and maintained, and that same standard applies to exterior work that has to perform through Texas heat, humidity, and storm season.
